                  The Aintree Institute

The Aintree Institute was built by local industrialist, William Hartley in 1890 as a social hall for the workers at his Jam Factory at Long Lane.

He also built, at about the same time, the Methodist Chapel at Cedar Road 500 yds away.

Both buildings still function today, however the factory has been closed now for many years.

It is the original home of the Aintree Action Group

Beatles on stage at the Institute

The Aintree Institute was one of many Dance Halls of the time, that were a step up from playing in the usual bars and celler clubs.

Though The Beatles had played regularly at the home of “Sensational Jive Dances” at the Institute since January, it wasn’t until 12 August 1961 that Beekay promoter Brian Kelly hired “The Dynamic Beatles”as Saturday night regulars. The gig lasted for seven weeks. Kelly, a great supporter of the group since May 1960, booked the band for nearly 60 appearances at the Institute and Litherland Town Hall in 1961 alone.

The Beatles performed 31 times at the Aintree Institute, which still features live music and community events.

1961--The Beatles perform at Aintree Institute, Liverpool, and at Lathom Hall, Seaforth, Liverpool.  which was described at the time 'as frequented by rough patrons who have a habit of tossing chairs at other people, including the group on stage'.

Sadly, it is now looking quite dilapidated and in need of restoration.
