Broomfield
Road bridge in Orrell Park was originally built to carry light traffic over the
old Midland Railway-Bootle Goods Line
to the Langton Dock at
Seaforth
During World War II Steam locomotives hauled tanks, guns, trucks and ammunition to British and US military bases throughout the UK, in preparation for D-Day
This in turn made the rail track a target for German bombers, and resulted in a number of the houses near to the bridge, in Kingfield Road being hit by bombs and destroyed.
Those houses were rebuilt after the
war, but many of the houses around the area had their foundations disturbed by the bombs.

On September 18th high-explosives fell on Walton Gaol, partially demolishing one wing and burying captives and captors alike. Twenty-one bodies were taken away by
the Mortuary Service. , eleven years later, a missing body was
found beneath some rubble which was being removed from the blitzed wing of the prison.
