     Girtonville College for Young Ladies

These Houses at the corner of Warbreck Rd and Orrell Lane were built on the site of the former Girtonville  College for Young Ladies.

This was destroyed by an aerial landmine which was dropped during the May blitz of 1941.

Fortunately, the building was empty that night - apart from an air raid warden who was killed by the blast.

The story told at that time was that the unfortunate man's severed head with steel helmet still attached, was found the next day at  Orrell Park Station, 750 yards away.

Girtonville College for Young Ladies' situated at the corner of Warbreck Road and Orrell Lane was a private school for young ladies. It was a very large house with a conservatory and a large garden.

The college was owned by a Mrs Swan-Johnstone  and her two sisters.
